Cubera snapper also called Lutjanus Cyanopterus can get over120lbs. The FL record is 116 lbs. caught in Clearwater FL. These fish are also called blue-fin around our area because they have a slight blue tinge on their fins. They also have jutting canine teeth that can look very menacing.
We will fish cubera around wrecks usually in deep water 100 Ft. or more but we have caught them in as little as 60 Ft. To catch them we will use bottom rigs with live pinfish, threadfin and shrimp. We just recently caught one bringing a small yellowtail that was 35 lbs. They usually require heavy tackle with braided line.
It is the largest of the snapper family and is rarer to find in the Gulf, as they like the Atlantic. They have a poison in them that is called ciguatera which is a toxin which they get from eating smaller fish that feed on dinoflagellates (a type of algae). Not all humans are vulnerable to this toxin but if you do have intestinal problems we advise to play it safe and not eat.
But, it’s all in the fun of the catch! We will make sure you have other fish to eat, although many of my friends love to eat Cubera.
Can catch 10 per day per angler, 12” min
