Dolphin Fishing in Florida

No, not Flipper! Now known as Mahi Mahi because of this error all the time, they changed the name of this fish to their Hawaiian name. Also they are called Dorado or also known as Coryphaena Hippurus, they get to 100 lbs. with the Florida record being 81 lbs. These fish are usually caught offshore about 60-80 miles out year round during may thru July. When the southwest winds from the Keys blow north, the fish will come closer to shore. We can then catch them around floating weed patches and driftwood using small live bait.

These fish have a compressed head and dorsal fin that goes the whole body very colorful yellow, gold and blue and very pretty swimming in the waters. Like a mood ring they can change their color intensity on their moods.

Dolphin can be strong and aggressive and can be exciting to catch using a 60lb leader with lures or a rigged whole sunken Pilchard. When they get onto the boat they can be aggressive so we make sure we have a good grip while they are coming aboard.

These fish breed quickly and they have a strong population so they are very popular and plentiful to buy at the fish market but nothing is better than a fresh Mahi straight out of the Gulf of Mexico.
