Permit Fishing in Florida

Permit, also known as Trachinotus Falcatus can be identified by their elongated dorsal and anal fins. Adult Permit are found around wrecks and reefs while the Joinvile’s are found along the beaches and in the surf line where they feed on small invertebrates.

They can get to 70 lbs. with the Florida record of 56.2 lbs. caught in Ft. Lauderdale Fl. On our boat we catch them about 25-50 lbs. using crabs and shrimp free lining out the back of the boat with a float or balloon about 3-5 ft. down using a 60 reel with 50 lb. braid and 30 lb. fluorocarbon leader #3 circle hook. They can be a pretty good fighter and don’t like to be fooled with lures.

They are regulated to not less than 11” or more than 22” fork length for 2 per day, but you can possess 1 over 22” per day.

These are a very good eating a game fish, similar to pompano. You are not likely to be able to find this fish in the local fish market. We like to smoke bake or broil and the smaller ones are tastier.
