Cero Mackerel Fishing in Florida

Yes, we fish for Cero Mackerel in South Florida. cero mackerel are the best eating of the mackerel family also known as Scomberomorus Regalis. These Ceros get to 20 lb. with the Florida record 17.2 lbs. caught in Islamorada, Fl. Ceros exist only in the warm Caribbean and some southerly Gulf waters by Texas, and nowhere else in the world.

Cero’s are usually caught around wrecks and coral reefs when fishing for King or Spanish mackerel. We fish with a wire leader with live bait and spoon jigs or you can use cut bait, or live shrimp weighted with a slip-sinker if the current runs strong. They are found October thru April where we see birds and bait schools.

Cero and Spanish mackerel are generally the same size can look very similar. They grow to a maximum size of about three feet. They are usually caught by the same method but can be told apart because Ceros have a distinct yellow lateral line. There is no limits for catching a cero.

The cero mackerel isn’t the biggest of the mackerels but by far the tastiest. It is a sushi grade fish that is best served as sashimi and makes an amazing ceviche.
