Cobia Fishing in Florida

Cobia, also known as Rachycentron Canadum get to 150 lbs. with the Florida record being 130.1 lbs. caught in Destin FL. Cobia look a lot like a shark but have no teeth and are brown and white with 2 darker brown bands on the tail which gets darker when they are spawning and little spines along the top of its head.

Cobia are usually solitary except in spawning season then they travel in pairs. They will fish around wrecks or the reef bottoms. They are another great sport fish that are thrilling to catch.

Cobia can be caught by spinning, plug casting, bottom fishing and by trolling. We use a medium heavy rod and reel with 20# to 30# line (Minimum 200yrds.) 2 – 4oz egg sinker on line above swivel, 3’ 40#-50# shock leader. They also like tube jigs and eel lures. These fish travel up and down gulf coast traveling by Naples from October thru April following large rays sometimes as close as 20 ft. from shore line

Considered very good eating, we suggest grilling or bake stuffed. Ask me for my favorite recipe. Since this is one of the more table friendly Florida fish, cobia recipes cater to this species medium flavor and firmer texture

Did you know….. Fish that have thin fins with a split tail shows that they move very quickly or have to cover great distances. On the other hand, fish that live among rocks and reefs near the ocean floor have a broad lateral fin and large tails to swim more carefully.
