Greater Amberjack Fishing in Florida

There are three main types of amberjacks: the greater, the lesser and the banded rudderfish. Greater Amberjacks known as Seriola Dumerili get to be 150 lbs. with the Florida record at 142 lbs. caught in Islamorada, FL. There is a subtle difference between the greater amberjack and the lesser amberjack….the greater is longer!

Florida regulations have a minimum of 34” fork length with 1 per day limit. They are also not able to be caught from June 1-July 31. I typically use 50 to 100 pound tackle, but lighter tackle can also be used in many situations. When amberjack get excited, they will also come to the surface. They like to stay in deeper water and are usually caught when fishing barracuda or shark year round. I use heavy tackle with any sort of live bait fish with a 50lb braid lines.

This is a very tasty white meat fish. It is excellent when grilled, especially if marinated first. New Orleans restaurants have recently begun to offer AJ on the menu even using the name on the menus.

1 per person per day 34” min (closed Jun 1-July 31)
