King Mackerel Fishing in Florida

King Mackerel is the largest of mackerel family also known as Scomberomorus Maculatus are a part of the tuna family. These fish can get to over 100 lbs. With the Florida record being 90 lbs. caught in Key West. They move thru the Naples area from October and by April they are heading south of the keys sometimes getting 100 yards from the beach where we can catch them from 30 to 50 lbs.

These slender, streamlined fish troll around wrecks and ledges but are caught drifting or trolling. We use #4 planers with 80 lb. line with large spoons and jigs since they can put on a good fight. They have sharp teeth and powerful jaw and can swim at a good speed since they have 2 dorsal fins and a row of small finlets on the lower half of their bodies. King mackerel fishing regulations are divided into two separate fisheries: the Atlantic fishery and the Gulf-Atlantic fishery. The limits vary by fishery, region and season. They must be at least 24 inches in fork length to keep.

Kings are an oily fish which is usually good broiled or smoked. Since they do have a stronger fish taste my Mates to add fresh lemon to take down the fishy taste and enjoy.

Can catch 2 per day per angler 24” min
