Lane Snapper Fishing in Florida

Some of our client’s have never heard of Lane Snapper. They are native to the Atlantic Ocean and are the most Common of the Snapper Family. Known as Lutjanus Synagris, lane snapper get to 8 lbs. with the Florida record being only is 6.6 lbs. caught in Pensacola FL. The official Louisiana record is much larger, a 12.08-pound taken from Ship Shoal Blocks in 2009. They are found in water 50-100 ft. deep over hard bottoms and reefs. We use a 20lb braid 30 lb. fluorocarbon leader with cut squid, live shrimp and cut threadfin year round. A Cuban study showed their diet is 32 percent fish and 28 percent crustaceans.

Since they are small, they do not count against your red snapper limit but counts on the aggregate limit. This fish is also called “candy snapper” because they are striped like a candy cane. While they are pink or orangey-pink in their body color they have a nice yellow edging along their fins.

The eating is excellent, good white fish very mild and good for ceviche to add a little “spice” to your meal. I just caught 20 of them with a family yesterday and they called to let me know that they fried it in a pan with some salt, pepper and lemon and it was fantastic.
