Lesser Amberjack Fishing in Florida

A Lesser Amberjack is a smaller version of a greater amberjack, also known as Seriola Fasciata are usually found under 10 lbs. We catch 14-22” usually in deeper waters. Greater and lesser amberjacks can be told apart by counting the total gill rakers; 23-26 are found in lesser amberjacks and 11-19 in the greater. Lessers are an olive green with a dark band going up toward their eyes.

We fish for lessers just like the greater’s but they usually found deeper out.

The main difference between the lesser and greater amberjacks is the greater amberjack is longer than the lesser amberjack. In fact, the greater amberjack is four times longer than it is deep (side height); while the lesser amberjack is only about 3-1/2 times longer than deep, not counting the fins.

Just like the AJ, the lesser is good eating as well and is getting a good plug at restaurants in the South.

5 per day per angler 12’-22” in

Did you know…..A fishes age can be determined by the growth rings in it’s scales… A fish does not add new scales as it grows, but the scales it has increase in size. In this way, growth rings are formed and the rings reveal the age of a fish.
