We have to go out about 100 miles offshore to get red snapper, but boy are they worth it.
Also known as Lutjanus Campechanus, we can fish for them the end of May through the middle of July with 2 per angler per day. Red snapper is the Gulf’s signature fish and very popular in restaurants and seafood markets. They can grow up to 40 inches, weigh up to 50 lbs and live up to 50 years. The record is 46 lbs caught in Destin FL.
We will catch them in the shallow offshore waters and you’ll know them when you see them because they are a distinct red. We will fish with shrimp or pinfish. We get many that are under the size limit. Since they are so overfished, this year there are new restrictions as of Jan 2016 so juveniles can start growing up and producing. This is all new fun facts for me so if you have any questions ask away, I know all the new rules and regulations and why. Why do I know? I’ve been fishing in these waters since I was a young boy.
As most fish eaters know, this catch is one of the best eating and the most advantageous to cook since there are literally hundreds of thousands of recipes to choose from.
Can catch 2 per angler per day 16” min
Did you know…….Commercial red snapper harvesters in the Gulf do not have a “season” like recreational anglers have. Instead, they are strictly regulated and monitored under a federal Individual Fishing Quota (IFQ) system in which each harvester is only allowed to harvest a certain amount of red snapper per year.
